A potentially planned mishap at the United Nations headquarters Tuesday morning left President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump walking up a halted escalator.

The incident prompted the White House to call for an immediate investigation into whether the stoppage was deliberate.

The president and first lady arrived at the Manhattan building ahead of Trump’s scheduled address to the U.N. General Assembly.

As they entered, Trump waved and mouthed “thank you” to reporters before stepping onto an escalator with Melania.

Moments later, the moving staircase jolted to a halt. Video captured Melania, dressed in high heels and standing just ahead of her husband, stumbling forward when the machine froze.

Another escalator beside theirs continued operating normally, but the couple chose to climb the stopped steps rather than switch.

Hours later, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt went public, referencing a Sunday Times report that claimed U.N. staffers had joked about shutting down escalators to embarrass the president.

“If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately,” Leavitt wrote on X.

According to The Associated Press, U.N. officials claimed that the stoppage may have been triggered by a member of Trump’s entourage rushing ahead and activating the safety mechanism.

Contrarily, British media suggested U.N. employees had floated the idea of using broken escalators and elevators to spotlight the organization’s financial struggles.

According to the Times of London, one reported joke among staff was to “turn off the escalators and lifts and simply tell Trump they ran out of money, so he had to walk up the stairs.”

Trump, who has already cut about $1 billion in U.S. funding to the U.N. since taking office, seized on the incident during his speech.

“All I got from the United Nations was an escalator on the way up that stopped in the middle,” he told the assembly. “If the first lady wasn’t in great shape, she would’ve fallen.”

The president also complained about his teleprompter failing at the start of his address, saying the two glitches gave him more reason to mock the international body.

“These are the two things I got from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” Trump quipped.

He lightened the mood, adding, “I feel very happy to be up here with you, nevertheless — and that way you speak more from the heart — I can only say that whoever is operating this teleprompter is in big trouble,” drawing laughter from the audience.

Trump pressed on, noting that he had ended multiple conflicts without help from the U.N.

“I ended seven wars, dealt with leaders of each country, and never even received a call from the UN offering to help in finalizing the deal,” he said.

“The United Nations wasn’t there for us. They weren’t there. I thought of it after the fact, not during these negotiations… what is the purpose of the UN? It’s not even coming close to living up to that potential.”

During a later appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Leavitt said that what happened looked intentional.

When Watters asked whether the escalator incident could be sabotage, she replied, “That’s definitely what it appears to be to me.”

She cited troubling details from the London Times articles, describing how “U.N. globalist staffers were basically plotting to set up the president of the United States.”

“And first it was the escalator, then it was the teleprompter,” she began.

“Then Katie Pavlich from Townhall, who we offered a seat in the press pool to cover the president’s historic speech today, noticed that the audio inside of the room was much lower and different for the president of the United States than the previous speaker.”

Leavitt said the incidents are now under review by the Secret Service.

“If we find that these were U.N. staffers who were purposefully trying to trip up, literally trip up the president and the first lady of the United States, well there better be accountability for those people,” she warned.
