In advance of the immigrant surge expected over the coming days, authorities have been instructed to turn loose those already in custody with no way to track them.
The Biden administration is reportedly directing Customs and Border Protection to simply release immigrants into the country without court dates or any way to track them down in the future as overcrowded facilities brace for a new surge.
The alarming memo was prepared after over 11,000 immigrants were caught crossing the southern border on Tuesday alone, surpassing the Department of Homeland Security’s expectations of 10,000 per day for after Title 42 formally expires on Thursday.
The administration has already been releasing immigrants without court dates under a program known as Alternatives to Detention, which requires them to check in on a mobile app until a court date is assigned.
The new policy would release immigrants on “parole” and ask them to report to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office, but without enrolling them in the program tracking them down to ensure compliance is virtually impossible.
“We’re already breaking and we haven’t hit the starting line,” one DHS official told NBC News.
Beyond Crisis, Country Faces Immigration Catastrophe
Title 42 is set to expire at 11:59PM Eastern time on Thursday. Yet facilities are already well beyond capacity.
According to the two sources who spoke to NBC, Customs and Border Protection processing centers are currently holding over 27,000 immigrants despite being equipped to hold just about 18,000.
Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz personally estimates that 60,000 to 65,000 immigrants are currently in northern Mexico waiting for Thursday to enter the US.
“It’s a public health danger. We will start having people die,” the anonymous DHS official said of the overcrowding.
“This administration should have been building bed space for the last two years. Instead, they’ve chosen to reduce bed space and are now going to be releasing illegal aliens into the U.S. to temporarily accommodate new illegal aliens arriving into the U.S.,” said Jon Feere, the director of investigations at the Center for Immigration Studies.
ICE has not commented.
