Firebrand GOP Rep Ready To Work With Dems

4 mins read

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stunned Washington on Monday when she signaled she was open to working with Democrats on a controversial health care issue at the center of the ongoing government shutdown.

The Georgia Republican, known for her fiery conservative stance, broke ranks with the GOP in a post on X, saying she was “absolutely disgusted” by the possibility of health insurance premiums doubling if key Affordable Care Act tax credits expire.

Despite her opposition to the Obama-era law, Greene admitted the financial impact would devastate many families, including her own.

She wrote that while she still rejects the Affordable Care Act, she can’t ignore the reality that ordinary Americans would be hit hard if Congress fails to act.

Greene noted that her decision came after learning her own adult children’s insurance premiums could double in 2026 if the tax credits disappear.

She said she’s aware her position will anger many within the GOP but insisted her focus remains on protecting working families.

“I’m going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE,” Greene wrote, adding that the same fate would hit “hard-working people” across her district.

Greene made clear that her support does not extend to expanding benefits for illegal immigrants.

“I’m a Republican and won’t vote for illegals to have any tax payer funded healthcare or benefits,” she wrote. “I’m AMERICA ONLY.”

She insisted she was not playing political games but instead choosing to “carve [her] own lane.”

While reaffirming her opposition to socialized health care, Greene argued that Americans should not face financial ruin because of government inaction.

“I’m absolutely disgusted that health insurance premiums will DOUBLE if the tax credits expire this year,” she tweeted.

Greene, who has often clashed with her own leadership on issues like foreign aid and spending, blasted House Republicans for ignoring the crisis.

She accused GOP leaders of being more focused on sending billions overseas than addressing skyrocketing insurance costs.

“Not a single Republican in leadership talked to us about this or has given us a plan to help Americans deal with their health insurance premiums DOUBLING,” she wrote.

She added that Congress should focus less on foreign wars and more on domestic concerns.

“All our country does is fund foreign countries and foreign wars, and never does anything to help the American people.”

She went on to describe the current government shutdown as “shameful” and “traitorous,” saying the battle on Capitol Hill is proof of how deeply the system is failing everyday Americans.

“Our laws and policies screw the American people so much that the government is shut down right now fighting over basic issues like this,” she wrote.

Greene said she remained in Washington while many of her colleagues left town after votes were canceled.

She claimed she was willing to meet with anyone serious about finding a solution, saying she was focused solely on Americans struggling with rising costs.

“We have to do something about the absolutely insane cost of insurance for Americans,” she said.

The congresswoman also issued a challenge to her peers, posting, “I’m here in Washington DC this week to meet with anyone who is AMERICA ONLY and will work with me on a plan for AMERICANS ONLY.”

President Donald Trump appeared to signal openness to a potential deal earlier in the day, suggesting his administration might be willing to discuss Democrats’ health care proposals before seemingly walking the idea back.

“We have a negotiation going on right now with the Democrats that could lead to very good things,” Trump told reporters. “And I’m talking about good things with regard to health care.”

When pressed about whether he would make a deal on the healthcare subsidies Democrats want extended, Trump said, “If we made the right deal, I’d make a deal. Sure.”

He noted that the current subsidy system wastes “billions and billions of dollars,” saying his administration could design a far better program for American families.

“We’re talking to them. I’m not saying that’s going to happen,” he added cautiously.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer responded by denying that any talks were taking place but indicated Democrats would participate if the president was serious.

“Trump’s claim isn’t true — but if he’s finally ready to work with Democrats, we’ll be at the table,” Schumer said.

But by evening, Trump appeared to revert to a more combative tone, accusing Democrats of prolonging the government shutdown for political reasons.

“Democrats have SHUT DOWN the United States Government right in the midst of one of the most successful Economies, including a Record Stock Market, that our Country has ever had,” the president wrote on Truth Social.

“This has sadly affected so many programs, services, and other elements of Society that Americans rely on — And it should not have happened.”

He added that he was open to discussions on health care only after Democrats agreed to reopen the government.

“I am happy to work with the Democrats on their Failed Healthcare Policies, or anything else, but first they must allow our Government to re-open. In fact, they should open our Government tonight.”

Democrats, led by Schumer, have continued to demand that Congress extend the expiring subsidies before approving a funding bill.

Schumer also said any potential compromise must include Trump’s direct involvement.

“We need the president involved,” he said. “[House Speaker Mike] Johnson and a whole lot of his caucus don’t like the ACA, don’t want to do the extensions. A lot of Republican senators do, but they’re not enough. You need Johnson and you need Trump to get it done.”
