New York Attorney General Letitia James is facing serious accusations from the Trump administration, which has formally referred her to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for possible criminal prosecution over alleged mortgage fraud.
According to a letter submitted Monday by Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director William Pulte, James is accused of falsifying information on mortgage applications in an effort to secure more favorable loan terms for a property in Virginia while serving in public office.
Pulte’s letter was directed to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, both of whom now lead the DOJ under President Donald Trump’s administration.
The referral claims James listed a home in Norfolk, Virginia, as her “principal residence” in 2023, a move that potentially misrepresented her legal residency status while she was holding the office of New York Attorney General, which requires her primary residence to be in the state she serves.
“Based on media reports, Ms. Letitia James has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms,” Pulte wrote.
He further claimed that James may have “falsified residence status” to obtain a lower interest rate and “misrepresented property descriptions” to meet qualifications for federally backed loans.
According to the FHFA director, James allegedly secured a $218,780 mortgage for the Virginia property in August 2023, just weeks before her office pursued a high-profile civil fraud trial against President Trump.
That case resulted in a $454 million judgment against the president based on accusations that he inflated his financial standing to obtain improved loan and insurance terms. Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing and remains in the process of appealing the ruling.
In addition to the Virginia residence, Pulte’s letter also references a separate property James owns in Brooklyn, New York.
The attorney general reportedly filed documentation suggesting the multi-unit building was a four-family home when in fact, it was registered as a five-family residence.
Pulte’s letter notes that this discrepancy could be used to qualify the property for more lenient financing options typically reserved for smaller, residential buildings.
The allegations suggest that by mislabeling property types and residency status, James may have violated federal statutes including wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, and submitting false statements to a financial institution.
Pulte’s letter points out that lenders often consider second homes to be higher-risk investments. In the event of financial hardship, borrowers are more likely to stop paying on secondary properties before falling behind on loans for their primary homes. That distinction often influences the terms lenders are willing to offer.
James has become a central figure in multiple investigations targeting President Trump. Following his landslide victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, James made clear she had no intention of backing away from her legal efforts against the president.
“We did not expect this result,” she said during a press conference the day after the election. “And we are prepared to respond to this result. My office has been preparing for several months because we’ve been here before. We faced this challenge before, and we used the rule of law to fight back.”
“And we are prepared to fight back once again, because as the attorney general of this great state, it is my job to protect and defend the rights of New Yorkers and the rule of law,” James continued.
James has also launched an initial inquiry into potential insider trading tied to President Trump’s 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs announced last week.
Her office confirmed Monday that it is examining whether individuals profited from non-public knowledge of the tariff delay.
President Trump responded to the referral by blasting New York attorney general on his Truth Social platform, writing, “Letitia James, a totally corrupt politician, should resign from her position as New York State Attorney General, IMMEDIATELY.”
“Everyone is trying to MAKE NEW YORK GREAT AGAIN, and it can never be done with this wacky crook in office.”
I can only hope they throw the book at this evil woman. Sounds like she should spend 40 years in prison for all the charges that may justifiably be made against her. As they say what comes around goes around and she deserves the full weight of the law Applied to her.
If done Justice awesome
The truth will always win over evil!
I would be willing to be that every single one of these radical activist judges, prosecutors or state A.G’s that harassed Mr. Trump for the past almost 7 years are all guilty of some crime. Ms. James, Alvin Bragg, Jack Smith, and especially James Boesberg all need to be investigated to find out who paid them to do this. Hopefully all of them will lose their positions in the judiciary forever.
There’s a difference of revenge vs. justice to a corrupt person that accused someone else of what she was doing (demon-party).. People needs to always pay attention to these news outlets – I mean propaganda FAKE news stories..
