Matt Moran, the executive director of Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Spirit of Virginia PAC, has resigned amid escalating tensions within the Virginia Republican Party.
The resignation follows Governor Youngkin’s call for GOP lieutenant governor nominee John Reid to suspend his campaign after allegations surfaced linking Reid to explicit images on a Tumblr account.
It was reportedly Moran who brought the images, which have not been verified at this time, to Youngkin’s attention.
Rick Buchanan, chairman of the 5th Congressional District GOP Committee, and John Massoud, his counterpart in the 6th District, sent an email to party Chairman Mark Peake requesting the Executive Committee review the images.
“Accusations have been made about our Lt. Governor nominee that are very serious. People are lining up on each side behind either the accuser or the accused, yet the evidence behind the allegations being made have not been forthcoming,” reads the letter.
Reid has vehemently denied any connection to the account, asserting that the accusations are politically motivated and rooted in bias against his sexuality.
Some skeptics have noted that the account in question has existed since 2014, before Reid became a public figure.
Reid Denounces Allegations as Political Smear
Reid, an openly gay conservative radio host and the first openly gay Republican nominee for statewide office in Virginia, has remained steadfast in his campaign.
He has accused Youngkin’s team of attempting to coerce him into withdrawing from the race.
In a video statement, Reid declared, “I had certainly hoped that we could put the bigotry and ugliness of last week behind us and unify our Republican ticket this year. But shockingly, once again representatives of my campaign have been told by the leader of Governor Youngkin’s political organization that the attacks on me will continue unless I drop out of the race for lieutenant governor.”
Despite the controversy, Reid has garnered significant support from grassroots conservatives.
Reid’s supporters argue that the attacks against him are indicative of a broader issue within the party regarding acceptance and support for candidates who do not fit the traditional mold.
The internal conflict has raised concerns about party unity ahead of the upcoming elections. The controversy also poses potential challenges for Governor Youngkin’s political aspirations, as the handling of the situation may impact his standing within the party and among voters.
Youngkin is a wonderful leader and I don’t think it is time to judge Reed and allow the voters to determine.
We don’t need gays in our public offices or we’ll get gay laws sh8ved up our ….
