The FBI reportedly allowed Asif Raza Merchant, a Pakistani man accused of plotting with Tehran to assassinate former President Donald Trump, to enter the United States.
According to documents reviewed by Just the News, Merchant was let in under “significant public benefit parole” despite being flagged on a terrorism watchlist and having recently traveled to Iran.
The decision unfolded back in April when Merchant landed at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
Upon arrival, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force took the precautionary steps of interviewing him, taking his fingerprints, and inspecting his electronic devices.
Yet, despite these measures and his suspicious background, Merchant was allowed to leave the airport with special parole status.
An FBI interview memo notes that Merchant was “polite and cooperative throughout the encounter” and had recently traveled to Iran.
Despite the parole status expiring on May 11, it wasn’t until July 12 that authorities arrested Merchant, following a tip-off from a confidential human source who revealed that he had attempted to hire assassins and was planning to exit the United States.
Immigration records from his April 13 arrival clearly labeled him as a “Lookout Qualified Person of Interest” in a Department of Homeland Security database.
Despite traveling from a country associated with terrorist activity, Merchant was “released without incident” and allowed to travel to a family member’s home in Texas.
Officials suggest that the parole decision might have been a tactic to turn Merchant into a cooperator or uncover his intentions and connections within the U.S.
However, this approach carries the risk of losing track of him, as noted by law enforcement officials who alerted Just the News.
Assassination Plot Uncovered
The Justice Department revealed that Merchant attempted to recruit someone for an assassination plot shortly after arriving in the U.S., and that individual became a confidential informant.
Merchant reportedly discussed various assassination methods with the informant and planned to provide instructions once he left the U.S. However, law enforcement intercepted him before he could depart.
Ultimately, Merchant was arrested on July 12 as he tried to leave the country.
Prosecutors have charged him with organizing a “murder-for-hire” plot to assassinate U.S. politicians or government officials, claiming he acted “on behalf of others overseas” with ties to Iran.
While Trump wasn’t directly named in the complaint, sources confirmed to ABC News that he was a target.
