North Carolina’s governor has removed himself for consideration to become Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate.

In a Monday Night statement, Roy Cooper emphasized his continued support for Harris’ campaign, despite turning down a potential role as the Vice President.

“I strongly support Vice President Harris’ campaign for President,” he stated. “I know she’s going to win and I was honored to be considered for this role. This just wasn’t the right time for North Carolina and for me to potentially be on a national ticket.”

He added, “As I’ve said from the beginning, she has an outstanding list of people from which to choose, and we’ll all work to make sure she wins.”

According to an insider connected to Harris’ hunt for a running mate, Cooper has plans to run for the U.S. Senate in 2026, which influenced his decision to withdraw.

Cooper reportedly never expressed a desire to be vice president and explicitly told Harris’ campaign that he was uninterested in joining the ticket.

Following Cooper’s announcement, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona and Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania have emerged as leading Democrat contenders to run with Harris.

Other potential candidates include Governors Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Tim Walz of Minnesota, and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, as well as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

On Monday, Shapiro and Whitmer held a rally in the suburbs of Philadelphia, where they highlighted the differences between Harris and former President Donald Trump.

Shapiro praised Harris’ career in law enforcement, from her tenure as district attorney in San Francisco to her role as California’s attorney general, dubbing her “tough as nails.” He that unlike Trump, the vice president is committed to “real freedom.”

Whitmer echoed these sentiments, noting, “We are the party, as Gov. Shapiro likes to say, of real freedom for Americans.”

Shapiro criticized Trump, urging the audience to review Project 2025, a Republican initiative for future administration policies, that the ex-president has repeatedly denied being involved with.

He warned, “He is dangerous, he is destructive, and the guardrails are off. And here’s the other thing: He’s told us what he wants to do. Y’all, go crack open that whole Project 2025 thing. Go take a look at what his buddies and all his former staff wrote. … It’s really scary.”

He also mocked Trump by mimicking his actions on stage, suggesting that while Trump hugs the flag, “he’s stripping away our freedoms.”

Trump hugged and kissed the American flag at the Conservative Political Action Conference in both 2020 and 2024.

Whitmer went on the offensive and attacked Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), claiming that he doesn’t believe women are men’s equals, knocking his lack of political experience.

“To be clear, Kamala Harris has more experience than the Trump-Vance ticket combined.” She added that Vance’s recent comments and actions demonstrate he “does not see women as equals” and is “scared of us.”

“As Democrats, we want everyone to have a seat at the table.” She referenced Vance’s controversially comments about Democratic leaders being “childless cat ladies,” remarking, “I mean, even cat lovers and dog lovers alike.”

The rally in Pennsylvania, a crucial battleground state, drew over 1,000 attendees, many of whom were enthusiastic about Harris’ leadership following Biden’s decision to step aside.

The Harris campaign has indicated that she intends to select a running mate by August 7.

  1. “To be clear, Kamala Harris has more experience than the Trump-Vance ticket combined.”

Hahaha, gotta laugh at what that experience is IN.

I hope Mark Kelley’s “experience” in providing Chinese spy balloons keeps him off the ticket. Or maybe that would help her get defeated….

  2. Anyone? Just Anyone tell us what freedoms were either lost or compromised during Trumps term in office…….I’ll wait.

  3. Amazing how quickly a hated politician can overnight become the savior of the party. More of the emperors’ new cloths. The left are trying to convince the American public that they are excited about Harris. What an attitude change overnight. I doubt that most Americans will fall for their fake enthusiasm.
