The Senate minority leader, 81 years old, was hospitalized and is receiving treatment after a Wednesday evening dinner.

UPDATE: Mitch McConnell suffered a concussion, his spokesman confirmed Thursday afternoon. He will remain in the hospital “for a few days of observation and treatment”.

McConnell was attending a dinner for the Senate Leadership Fund, a fundraising committee intended to protect and expand Republican senate seats, when he tripped and required transportation to the hospital.

An emergency call was placed at 9:17pm in DC, according to the DC Realtime News Twitter account.

McConnell (R-KY) was reportedly attending a private dinner at the Waldorf Astoria hotel when he tripped and fell.

“This evening, Leader McConnell tripped at a local hotel during a private dinner,” David Popp, McConnell’s spokesman, said in a brief statement. “He has been admitted to the hospital, where he is receiving treatment.”

An unnamed senator told NBC News they spoke with a family member of McConnel and was told “he’s going to be okay”.

On Thursday morning, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he spoke with McConnell’s staff.

“My thoughts this morning are with my good friend Leader Mitch McConnell, who is recovering from in the hospital after an accident last night,” Schumer said from the Senate floor.

“This morning I offer a prayer of strength and healing for the leader and his family. I called the leader this morning and spoke briefly with his staff to extend my prayers and well wishes.”

It’s not the first time the senator has suffered a fall injury. In 2019, he required surgery for a fractured shoulder after tripping on his patio at home.

McConnell is currently serving his seventh term in the Senate.

He may have been celebrating the Republicans victory after a late Senate vote to overturn a DC crime bill that became surprisingly bipartisan after President Joe Biden indicated he would support the vote.
