DeSantis ‘Surprised’ by Trump’s Criticism, Responds

1 min read

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he was “surprised” by former President Donald Trump’s criticism of his state’s six-week abortion ban.

Trump called the ban “too harsh” last month in an interview with The Messenger.

“If you look at what DeSantis did, a lot of people don’t even know if he knew what he was doing,” Trump said. “But he signed six weeks, and many people within the pro-life movement feel that that was too harsh.”

DeSantis, who has consistently polled a distant second to Trump, finally took the opportunity to respond.

“I was really surprised because he’s a Florida resident,” he told CBN News’ David Brody in an interview set to air on Friday.

“I thought he would compliment the fact that we were able to do the heartbeat bill, which pro-lifers have wanted for a long time,” DeSantis went on. “He never complimented, never said anything about it then he was asked about it and he said it was ‘harsh.’”

Asked if he thought Trump was being “too soft” on abortion in a follow-up question, DeSantis responded, “I think so.”

“While I appreciate what the former president has done in a variety of realms, he opposes that bill,” he said. “He said it was ‘harsh’ to protect an unborn child when there’s a detectable heartbeat. I think that’s humane to do.”

“I think pro-lifers have been wanting to see good pro-life protections whether it’s Florida or Iowa under Kim Reynolds,” DeSantis added.

Polling suggests most Americans agree with Trump, which he may be counting on if he has to face President Joe Biden in the general election. Democrats will seek to make abortion rights a central issue.

A Gallup poll released Wednesday found that 69% of Americans support abortion rights through the first trimester, or about 12 weeks. Only 37% support it through the second trimester.

  1. Every time Trump makes negative comments about what his competition is doing causes me to rethink voting for him. So now does Trump think abortion is ok but just won’t come right out and say it? He needs to be talking about what the demonRats are doing to this country and attacking them not any of his competition in his run for President.

    • CORRECT! With the Satanic De3mocrat party out there, anyone, even Trump, should have a tremendously deep & long group of creatins to attack.

    • I am not pro abortion, I have a niece that my parents would have made my sister abort if they had found out sooner. I helped keep the secret. But this is politics and being too strongly anti-abortion could help sway the election to the leftists. The country may not survive another progressive President. We need a message that will not kill our chances of saving our country. After the election we can start moderating the insanity of abortion like here in Commierado. For those who seem to think it can’t wait, if we lose in 2024 it will wait, possibly forever!

  2. I’ve about had it with Trump. While he was a genuinely great POTUS, his childish rants are getting mighty old. If I were DeSantis, I think I would tell him to recognize the fact that “I” am trying to support him & that he should shut the Hell up with his childishness.

    • That is exactly how I feel. Every time he does something like this makes me reconsider any vote for him. He needs to attack the demonRats who are destroying this great country not someone who will be running against him. You don’t beat the competition by maligning them. All it does is make him look childish.

  3. I think y’all need to remember Trump was a registered DEM, right up ’til he decided to run for POTUS! All we’re seeing now is very typical Trump; the Trumps I grew up aware of on LI as a kid, when “the Donald” was too. Keep in mind, he was, and still is, pro-choice, pro- sexual deviants, and a lot of other leftist positions socially. His only “conservative” stance at all is fiscal. Explode all y’all like, he did precisely what Hitler did in the ’30s in Germany: he tickled ears with the things y’all wanted to hear! But the reality of his administration, while better than I expected, or dared hope for, was NOT the rosay picture he paints and so many swallowed hook, line, and sinker! Conversely, neither was he the demon the left has portrayed, entirely. But now, if he persists I’m running, ALL he will accomplish is a Dem win in ’24. Between the Dems, and Never Trumpers, there are not enough votes left to overcome, and this time Yhwh God is not going to put him in, as He did in ’16, because Trump failed to do the 1 task for which he was installed: to gather the religious leaders and lead a national repentance over our nation’s sins we have committed for decades like legalizing aberrant sexual behaviors (remember Sodom and Gomorrah, and what happened there?), legalizing the mass slaughter of unborn infants for “convenience”, crony “capitalism”, intrusions in other nations’affairs, where we had no business going, etc. Those sins have a consequential penalty, and that consequence is now coming due. Yes, other nations, in fact all humanity, have also sinned and remain unrepentant, so will soon also be paying the price for those sins. Trump is not now, and never was who most of his supporters believe him to be. He, too, is an “entitled elite”… That he loves America a little more than his fellows do turned them against him, but changed him not 1 whit!
