The Trump administration is ramping up its immigration crackdown with a major expansion of detention capabilities in the Midwest.

Indiana is set to open a new wing at a state correctional facility designated specifically for holding illegal migrants awaiting deportation.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revealed the plans on Tuesday, announcing the development of a 1,000-bed addition at Miami Correctional Facility, dubbed the “Speedway Slammer.”

“Today, we’re announcing a new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention bed space by 1,000 beds,” Noem posted on X.

“Thanks to [Indiana Gov. Mike Braun] for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country.”

Noem added a warning to those residing in the U.S. unlawfully: “If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Indiana’s Speedway Slammer.”

The facility’s nickname pays tribute to Indiana’s deep-rooted motorsports culture, referencing the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun had already confirmed earlier this month that his state would work in lockstep with the Trump administration in its renewed effort to remove unlawful entrants from U.S. soil.

In a press release issued Aug. 1, Braun announced that Indiana’s Department of Correction would coordinate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to allocate up to 1,000 beds between Miami Correctional Facility and nearby Grissom Joint Air Reserve Base for federal use.

According to the governor, this new agreement is part of Indiana’s commitment to assist President Donald Trump in executing mass deportations.

Camp Atterbury, a site run by the Indiana National Guard, will also be used as a temporary holding area for illegal migrants being processed for removal, according to Braun’s office.

“We are proud to work with President Trump and Secretary Noem as they remove the worst of the worst with this innovative partnership,” Braun stated.

“Indiana is taking a comprehensive and collaborative approach to combating illegal immigration and will continue to lead the way among states.”

The effort is being funded through a sweeping reconciliation bill signed into law by President Trump last month, which the administration has referred to as the “one big, beautiful bill.”

The legislation allocated funding for an expansion of the 287(g) program, which is designed to enhance cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE, and included support for up to 80,000 federal detention beds nationwide.

The Speedway Slammer announcement comes on the heels of another high-profile facility opening in Florida earlier this summer.

That facility, known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” was launched by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and has already begun housing thousands of migrants in a swampland outpost of the Everglades.

Located on the grounds of a former airport, the Florida facility was unveiled July 3 and features tent-based accommodations for detainees.

Its initial capacity stands at 2,000, with the potential to double in size. DeSantis has made clear that this site is not intended to offer creature comforts.

“I’m pleased to report that those flights out of Alligator Alcatraz by DHS have begun. The cadence is increasing. We’ve already had a number of flights, in the last few days, we’ve had hundreds of illegals [that] have been removed from here,” DeSantis said at the time.

According to state documents, Florida is already preparing to expand its detention network.

Records show that a “North Detention Facility” is in the works, with equipment purchases for the site, including a WeatherSTEM system and lightning sirens, costing just under $40,000.

Though not yet officially confirmed, the location of the new facility is widely believed to be Camp Blanding in northern Florida.

Gov. DeSantis has fielded repeated questions about the site but has said that its use depends on capacity thresholds being met at Alligator Alcatraz.

“I’m willing to do Blanding once Alligator Alcatraz is filled, and so DHS has started moving in a significant number of people. I think you’re going to — and they’re starting to deport people from there too,” DeSantis said last month. “Remember, this is not the Ritz Carlton, ok?”

He continued, explaining his reasoning behind waiting: “But what I don’t want to do is set up Blanding, if, you know, one is 60 percent full and then the other is 40 percent [full]. I’d rather just have — channel everyone to Alligator, since it’s easier.”

DeSantis also commented on the logistical options for the potential new site, noting that Camp Blanding does have an operational runway but is not quite as functional as the one at Alligator Alcatraz.

“You may be able to move people right out of there. You do have Cecil Field very close to that. So, when we look at this, is it really what makes logistical sense? Again, I’m not creating the Four Seasons for illegal aliens. I’m not detaining just to detain,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a completely different political twist, Noem’s home state of South Dakota has been thrust into the spotlight due to an unexpected gubernatorial candidacy.

Terry Gleason, a 44-year-old registered Republican, has announced he’s entering the 2026 race as an independent, despite his past as a convicted sex offender.

Gleason was convicted in 2000 for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl when he was 19. He served eight years in prison and remains on the sex offender registry.

In a call with KELOLAND News this week, he denied the assault and claimed his criminal status should not disqualify him from political life.

According to the Daily Mail, Gleason acknowledged dating the underage girl but insisted he never assaulted her.

“The worst I did is that I did date the girl, we [had a] four years difference and the police thought I was doing something with her cause we were dating,” he said.

“I pleaded guilty to it, that’s why I’m on the registry, but I did not actually commit the offense.”
