Senate Democrats went insane over President Donald Trump’s decision to remove the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) only hours after the agency published a dismal July jobs report.
The data, released on Friday morning, revealed the economy added just 73,000 jobs in July—a figure well below expectations.
The report also revised previous numbers from May and June downward by a staggering 258,000 jobs combined.
Those weak figures came as a blow to an administration already under scrutiny for its trade and monetary policies.

Trump moved quickly to blame the disappointing data on Dr. Erika McEntarfer, a Biden-era appointee who had been serving as Commissioner of Labor Statistics.
The president accused her of using the position to influence public perception ahead of the 2024 election.
“I was just informed that our Country’s ‘Jobs Numbers’ are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s chances of Victory,” Trump posted online.
The president claimed revisions of 818,000 jobs earlier in March and another 112,000 adjustment prior to the election supported his view that political interference had infected the reporting process.
“I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified,” he added.
“These were Records — No one can be that wrong? We need accurate Jobs Numbers.”
Trump also took aim at the Federal Reserve, claiming the central bank manipulated interest rates in an attempt to swing the election.
“The Economy is BOOMING under ‘TRUMP’ despite a Fed that also plays games, this time with Interest Rates, where they lowered them twice, and substantially, just before the Presidential Election, I assume in the hopes of getting ‘Kamala’ elected – How did that work out?” he continued, ending the post with renewed calls to remove Fed Chair Jerome Powell. “Jerome Powell should be put out to pasture.”
His decision came after the Labor Department revised down its estimate of jobs gains for May and June to less than 20,000 for each month, 258,000 fewer jobs than it initially reported.
“In my opinion, today’s Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad — Just like when they had three great days around the 2024 Presidential Election, and then, those numbers were ‘taken away’ on November 15, 2024, right after the Election, when the Jobs Numbers were massively revised DOWNWARD, making a correction of over 818,000 Jobs — A TOTAL SCAM,” he added in a follow-up post.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) took to social media to weigh in. “Instead of helping people get good jobs, Donald Trump just fired the statistician who reported bad jobs data that the wanna-be king doesn’t like.”
Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) echoed the concern. “It sounds very Soviet, very authoritarian, very 1984,” he said.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) blamed Trump’s trade policies for the slowdown in hiring and calling the firings a distraction.
“It is disturbing to say, but the chickens are coming home to roost on Donald Trump’s destructive trade war, and the American people are paying price,” Schumer said.
“You sow chaos, Donald Trump, you reap chaos. That is what the president is finding out this morning.”
Schumer described the downward revisions for May and June, both now showing fewer than 20,000 jobs added each month, as a glaring warning sign.
“Donald Trump’s chaotic tariffs are already bleeding our economy of good-paying jobs,” he said. “That is what tariff whiplash looks like. Businesses, small, large, medium always need stability but businesses are waving around their arms in the dark without a clue of what Donald Trump is going to do next.”
He also took aim at Trump’s decision to dismiss the BLS commissioner, comparing it to authoritarian behavior.
“What does a bad leader do when they get bad news? Shoot the messenger. That’s just what happened with the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Today we got some of the worst labor numbers that we’ve gotten in a long time.”
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro also spoke out Friday morning, siding with the president and accusing the BLS of routinely publishing flawed information.
“The BLS doesn’t seem to be able to get that jobs number right. This has been going on for over a year,” Navarro said during an interview with NewsNation’s “The Hill.”
“It’s either incompetence or political interference, either way ahead, roll today, and that’s appropriate, because this simply isn’t right,” he added.
