MSNBC political reporter and host Alex Wagner is stepping away from her nightly anchoring duties to launch a new podcast focusing on President Trump.
The podcast, titled Trumpland, will feature weekly episodes with firsthand reporting and anecdotes from across the country.
It is part of a special assignment announced earlier this month by MSNBC, aimed at covering the early days of Trump’s administration as he begins his second term.
MSNBC has also announced that Rachel Maddow, a staunch critic of Trump and a liberal favorite, will return to a five-day hosting schedule during Trump’s first 100 days, temporarily replacing Wagner’s nightly 9 p.m. show.
Maddow had previously stepped back to focus on other projects, with Wagner filling her slot in 2022.
“Wagner will head into the field to cover the biggest stories as they develop in real time during Trump’s first 100 days in office, reporting on the impact of his early promises and policies on the electorate,” the network stated.
New episodes of Trumpland will air on Thursdays through April, when Wagner is expected to return to her full-time hosting duties.
The podcast is part of MSNBC’s broader effort to expand into digital, audio, and streaming platforms as traditional cable news faces declining viewership in the era of cord-cutting.
Other media outlets are similarly navigating their response to Trump’s first week.
The Associated Press (AP) announced Thursday it will continue to refer to the Gulf of Mexico by its original name, citing its long-standing history and global recognition, despite Trump’s executive order renaming it the “Gulf of America.”
“The Gulf of Mexico has carried that name for more than 400 years,” stated Amanda Barrett, AP’s vice president of standards and inclusion.
“The Associated Press will refer to it by its original name while acknowledging the new name Trump has chosen.”
The AP noted its responsibility as an international news agency to ensure names and geography are easily recognizable to global audiences, stating that Trump’s order does not apply to Mexico or international bodies.
However, the AP said it would oblige Trump’s order to restore Alaska’s Denali mountain to its historical name of Mount McKinley.
