A group of Democratic senators unveiled a proposal on Monday aiming to eliminate the Electoral College.
For decades, Democrats have been frustrated with the Electoral College, over how it has allowed Republican candidates to win the presidency without securing the popular vote on numerous occasions.
While concerns arose that President-elect Donald Trump might continue this tradition, he managed to win the popular vote as well.
Democrat Sens. Brian Schatz of Hawaii, Dick Durbin of Illinois, and Peter Welch of Vermont, prominent progressive voices in the Senate, stressed the importance of enabling Americans to elect presidents based on popular vote alone.
The senators highlighted that in the previous 19 years, two U.S. presidents were chosen by the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote. Both cases resulted in Republican presidencies—George W. Bush in 2000 and Donald Trump in 2016.
“A group of Senate Democrats introduce bill to abolish the Electoral College, restoring democracy by allowing the direct election of presidents through popular vote alone,” a statement from the Senate Judiciary Committee said.
“In an election, the person who gets the most votes should win. It’s that simple,” Sen. Schatz stated.
“No one’s vote should count for more based on where they live. The Electoral College is outdated and it’s undemocratic. It’s time to end it.”
Durbin, who heads the Senate Judiciary Committee, highlighted his long-standing disapproval of the system and shared his efforts to address it in the past.
“In 2000, before the general election, I introduced a bipartisan resolution to amend the Constitution and abolish the electoral college. I still believe today that it’s time to retire this 18th century invention,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah opposed the proposal, firmly defending the Electoral College’s place in American governance.
“Yes, the Constitution was ratified during the 18th century. Does that mean we should ditch it? No! The Electoral College was from the beginning—and is today—a fundamental part of our Constitution,” he tweeted.
“Many of our most best laws are old. The Constitution is one of them. Protect it!”
Monday also saw Democratic senators tackling a separate controversial issue. Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, accompanied by 20 fellow Democrats, introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
This measure seeks to remove provisions included in the House’s version of the NDAA that restrict transgender children of service members from accessing gender-affirming care.
Baldwin was unequivocal in her support for the measure. “Let’s be clear: we’re talking about parents who are in uniform serving our country who have earned the right to make the best decisions for their families,” she said.
“I trust our service members and their doctors to make the best healthcare decisions for their kids, not politicians.”
The restriction, Baldwin stated, could affect up to 7,000 military-affiliated youth who might lose access to such care.
“In an election, the person who gets the most votes should win. It’s that simple,”
No, it’s not. Our founding fathers were educated men who knew the history of democracies. That’s why they established a constitutional republic instead. Democrats have been trying for nearly a hundred years to push the myth that we are a democracy. That would certainly serve their purpose of establishing a Democracy. Open borders also serve their purpose, as does letting convicted felons vote.
These leftwing regressive (advocates for totalitarian government a la Marx) fools will stop at nothing to try to destroy the Constitution. They WILL NOT succeed.
The hypocrisy of the democrats is astounding. Us Republicans who actually care about our country have to suffer through their demonic ideology and yet we forge on. The democrats on the other hand squeal like babies and have temper tantrums every time they don’t get their way. They make me want to 🤮.
If the electoral college were abolished, all national elections would be decided by the east and west coasts. The electoral college insures that all states, including the “flyover” states, have a say in who becomes our president. The Democrats, who have no moral principles, will do anything to establish themselves as the permanent party in power. That’s why they allowed millions of illegals into the country and have sanctuary cities and states. They will manage to let them vote, assuming they’ll vote in appreciation of the Democrats’ illegal actions and keep the Dems in power. Dems cheat. They have for generations. LBJ got into the Senate the first time by having his friendly areas vote the graveyards. You can Google it.
As usual, the Democrats are on the wrong side of the issue, whether from ignorance or malice I will leave to the reader. As a Constitutional Republic, the Electoral College is a crucial and integral part of ensuring equal representation across the country and avoiding dominance by large population centers with their warped outlook on life in the USA. Look at a map of precincts colored by how they voted. If we voted geographically, no Democrat would ever get in office again. That would be a shame. Who would we use as a bad example? Probably career politicians, regardless of flavor!! Where are term limits when we need them? Far too many of them are unqualified on the basis of lack of a grip on reality to hold a real job.
SCOTUS held years ago that Term Limits alter the eligibility rules for office and so require amending the Constitution. Frankly – I’d prefer a mandatory retirement age; very few federal pols make it to office before 50 or so. Age them out at 65 and you solve the term issue and the geriatrics like Pelosi, Schumer, McConnell, etc. Better for everyone to have sentient beings in office who know what century we’re in…
What’s your plan Demo’s? Eliminate 100,000,000 people too, just to make sure you win the popular vote? I am fed up with the coast of California making up our minds for us out here. That is what will happen. East and West coasts deciding everything and the Dems. will say “to H with the rest of you”. No thanks…
If these clowns don’t like the Electoral College and think they have a better solution, they are welcome to submit a Constitutional Amendment for ratification by the States. If they refuse the amendment route, they only are saying they don’t support the rule of law. Can’t have it both ways.
