Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman believes that a Republican Senator should be the next president of Harvard University.
An opinion piece in The Washington Post titled, “Harvard is in an almighty mess. Let Mitt Romney clean it up,” suggested that Romney to leverage his ability to foster unity to dismantle the Ivy League school’s “age of toxic polarization.”
Alumnus David Rosen hammered Harvard for neglecting to address the escalation of antisemitism on its campus in the wake of Hamas’ horrific Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
Fetterman took to X, formerly Twitter, to endorse Rosen’s nomination of Romney to take over the role.
“As an alumnus of Harvard, and after this mad season of antisemitism at Columbia, I co-sign,” he captioned a link to the article.
“This former Governor of Massachusetts doesn’t need a paycheck, but Harvard and its academic peers needs to recalibrate from far-left orthodoxy,” Fetterman added.

Rosen lauded Romney as the ideal “flag-bearer of our values” who will champion “what is right.”
He wrote that “the quality of leadership” in a post-Claudine Gay presidential candidate is “crucial.”
“The head of the university needs to embody our core values,” he wrote. “While there are likely other Americans of comparable prominence, Romney’s inherent ability to connect across divides renders him exactly what Harvard requires in this period of severe division.”
Rosen noted that the Utah lawmaker is “known for his allegiance to principle over conveniency,” who has blasted the University for its response to antisemitic students.
Romney, who announced that he would not seek re-election in 2024, skewered Harvard for failing to protect their Jewish student body in an open letter signed by four other prominent graduates.
“Despite these serious concerns, university leadership shockingly has been paralyzed,” the October letter read.
“We fear that history is on the verge of repeating itself. We know from studying the worst episodes of human history that violence must be nipped in the bud, bullies must be confronted, and inaction and handwringing incentivizes more acts of hate.”
Hours after the Oct. 7 attack, 30 Harvard student groups and over 100 faculty members banded together to lay the blame on Israel for provoking Hamas’s attack, claiming that Israel’s “apartheid regime” is “entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.”
Claudine Gay, the former president of Harvard University, stepped down from her role in early January following her controversial testimony before Congress concerning measures to combat antisemitism.
She repeatedly declined to provide a direct answer to questions from Elise Stefanik, a Republican Representative from New York, about whether the university would revoke admissions or discipline individuals for using phrases advocating violence against Jews.
