Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) proposed a bill that would revoke former President Donald Trump’s secret service detail if he is convicted.
On Friday, the House Homeland Security Committee Democrats announced on social media that Thompson introduced legislation that would strip “convicted felons sentenced to prison” of Secret Service protection.
The X, formerly Twitter post included a statement from Thompson about the bill he is championing.
“Unfortunately, current law doesn’t anticipate how Secret Service protection would impact the felony prison sentence of a protectee-even a former President,” he commented.

Thompson said that he finds it “regrettable” that Trump’s trial, which has been a ” previously unthought-of scenario” until now, has become the “reality” of the nation.
“Therefore, it is necessary for us to be prepared and update the law so the American people can be assured that protective status does not translate into special treatment-and that those who are sentenced to prison will indeed serve the time required of them,” he added.
The bill is lengthily titled the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act, in order to achieve the pithy acronym “DISGRACED.”
The legislation will ensure that Secret Service protection will “terminate for any person upon sentencing following conviction for a Federal or State offense that is punishable for a term of imprisonment of at least one year.”
In a fact sheet provided for the DISGRACED Former Protectees Act says that the bill will allow judges to sentence convicted individuals without needing to “factor in the logistical concerns of convicts with Secret Service.”
It will also “remove the potential for conflicting lines of authority” in the prisons any Secret Service protectees are sentenced to.
While the text of the bill itself does not mention Trump by name, the fact sheet highlights the “unprecedented 91 felony charges in Federal and State courts across the country” is currently facing.
It also clearly notes that the ” measure would apply to former President Trump.”
