GOP Firebrand Warns A Recession Is On The Horizon

3 mins read

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) cautioned on Friday that the United States “may be headed for a recession” as the holiday season approaches.

During an appearance on Fox’s “LiveNow” with Josh Breslow, Greene said she was increasingly concerned about economic slowdowns across the country.

“We’re seeing real softening in the economy, as we may be headed for a recession here, as we go into the holidays,” she said, adding that Americans had endured “enough political drama.”

President Trump has repeatedly dismissed Democratic attacks on his economic record, framing their arguments about affordability as nothing more than a political scam. Earlier this week, he blasted Democrats’ midterm messaging on inflation, labeling it a “con job.”

“Walmart said yesterday that the Thanksgiving [dinner] was 25 percent more expensive under Biden. To me, that’s a big number because Wal-Mart’s respected,” Trump told reporters.

He went on to argue that “the whole series of pricing and costs, you know the groceries, and everything else, it was a con job. Affordability, they call it, was a con job by the Democrats.”

The president claimed that the only thing Democrats excel at is deceit. “The Democrats are good at a few things, cheating on elections and conning people with facts that aren’t true,” Trump said.

Trump, who has positioned himself as a champion of lower prices and energy costs, argued that affordability had become a winning issue for Republicans under his leadership.

“If affordability is your issue, VOTE REPUBLICAN!” he posted Tuesday on Truth Social, touting what he described as plummeting energy costs.

By Thursday, Trump declared that the issue of affordability was “dead” for Democrats. He pointed again to Walmart’s latest report, which noted its holiday meal would serve ten people for under $4 per person, a lower cost than the prior year’s offering.

“My cost[s] are lower than the Democrats on everything, especially oil and gas!” Trump wrote. “So the Democrats ‘affordability’ issue is DEAD! STOP LYING!!!”

Greene, however, took a different stance, insisting that many Americans were still struggling with high costs.

The Georgia Republican pushed back on Trump’s assessment, saying she didn’t believe grocery prices were truly falling.

In an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Greene described her own experiences managing higher household expenses.

“I go to the grocery store myself,” she said. “Grocery prices remain high. Energy prices are high. My electricity bills are higher here in Washington, D.C., at my apartment, and they‘re also higher at my house in Rome, Ga., higher than they were a year ago.”

Greene warned that the rising cost of living continues to weigh heavily on working families. “Affordability is a problem,” she said, noting that she was most worried for younger generations. “They’re having a very hard time.”

Back in Georgia, Greene said she routinely hears from constituents who are overwhelmed by financial pressures.

“I’m hearing stories of, not only are we having a really hard time affording groceries and rent and things like that, but I’m also hearing stories about people maxing out their credit cards just to afford their monthly expenses,” she said.

The congresswoman tied this growing frustration to recent GOP election losses, suggesting that voters’ dissatisfaction with their economic circumstances helped Democrats notch key wins.

In a separate NBC interview, Greene said economic anxiety was “a significant factor in the elections,” arguing that the rising cost of living had become impossible to ignore.

She added that while she would give President Trump “some credit” for progress on inflation, high rent and housing costs continued to strain families across the country.

“The cost of living is a problem, and I’ve been talking about this for months,” Greene said.

She also urged lawmakers from both parties to set aside political fights and focus on preventing further economic damage.

“I’m calling for both sides, Democrats and Republicans, to do their job and go ahead and fund the CR [continuing resolution] so we can get back to work,” she said.

The continuing resolution, or CR, is a short-term measure that would temporarily fund the government while lawmakers negotiate a full-year spending bill.

But the Senate has repeatedly blocked the House-passed version of the CR, with Democrats opposing it for excluding money to renew Affordable Care Act premium tax credits that help millions afford healthcare.

Greene said the ongoing funding stalemate had only deepened public frustration. She described the shutdown as creating “chaos for the American people” and encouraged Senate Republicans to consider the “nuclear option,”  which would allow a bill to pass with a simple majority rather than the standard 60-vote threshold.

As the shutdown drags on, Greene continued to stress the urgency of addressing Americans’ economic pain.

“I’ll push everyone to pay attention to the true financial hardship that Americans are facing right now,” she said.

“And this is very much affecting my children’s generation, who are 22, 26 and 28, and that generation is looking towards the future with very little hope.”

Greene again took aim at House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), criticizing his decision to keep the chamber out of session while ordinary Americans continue to work through financial hardship.

“I’m not taking a paycheck during the shutdown, but I know some of my colleagues are,” she said. “And so I think it’s absolutely the worst move and it’s the worst political move to have the House in recess and for us to not be here working.”
