Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries has officially endorsed controversial socialist Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City, handing fresh ammunition to Republican critics.
For months, Jeffries, the Brooklyn congressman who leads House Democrats, steered clear of the bruising mayoral contest after Mamdani’s primary win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo this summer.
But as early voting kicked off Friday in the nation’s largest city, Jeffries broke his silence, putting his name behind the most hard-left mayoral nominee in recent memory.
Jeffries acknowledged his policy differences with Mamdani, noting there were “areas of principled disagreement” between them.
Andrew Cuomo's ad against Mamdani is a pretty compelling message.
Also, it's obvious that without AI this would have been impossible to make with such a fast turnaround. It's not perfect, it's uncanny, but conveys the message. What else would you want?pic.twitter.com/M6IUN68h9U

Despite his reservations, Jeffries insisted Mamdani was uniquely focused on “addressing the affordability crisis” and guaranteed he would “be a mayor for all New Yorkers.”
The minority leader insisted his endorsement was about bringing the party together to fight President Trump in November, championing the Democratic ticket against the GOP.
“Zohran Mamdani has relentlessly focused on addressing the affordability crisis and explicitly committed to being a mayor for all New Yorkers, including those who do not support his candidacy,” Jeffries said.
“In that spirit, I support him and the entire citywide Democratic ticket in the general election.”
Jeffries had faced weeks of blistering criticism from progressives such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, both of whom had publicly pressured party leaders to stand behind their pick.
Even as Jeffries came out with his endorsement, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer remained on the sidelines, saying only he would continue to “have conversations” with the New York Democrat.
Mamdani, currently in the New York State Assembly representing parts of Queens, thanked Jeffries for the support but reiterated his promise to fight for every New Yorker.

“This campaign has always been about bringing people together to improve the quality of life for every New Yorker,” Mamdani claimed.
He pledged to deliver “a city government, and a Democratic Party, relentlessly committed to our affordability agenda — and to fighting Trump’s authoritarianism.”
Across the aisle, Republicans pounced on the news to paint Democrats as caving to their most extreme, radical wing.

“So-called ‘Leader’ Hakeem Jeffries has officially surrendered to Zohran Mamdani and the socialist mob now running the Democrat Party,” said National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) press secretary Mike Marinella.
The GOP portrayed Democrats’ “far-left takeover” as political self-destruction that doomed any chance of retaking the House.
The New York GOP responded in even harsher terms. Ed Cox, chair of the state party, slammed Jeffries’ endorsement as an act of “supreme cowardice and capitulation.”
Cox declared, “Democrats’ Minority Leader in Congress just threw his lot in with an openly Communist, anti-Semitic, defund-the-police, globalize-the-intifada extremist.”
He demanded every Democrat nationwide answer whether they stood with Mamdani or “the principles upon which our republic was founded.”
Republican strategists wasted no time rolling out a new attack ad, branding Mamdani as the “socialist boss” of the Democratic Party.
The spot, set to air in nearly a dozen key congressional districts, accuses Democrats of scheming to “raise taxes, defund the police, and build a socialist New York.”
NEW ADS: Democrat 'Leader' Hakeem Jeffries just endorsed Zohran Mamdani

The ad plasters the hammer and sickle, which are well-known communist symbols, on screen and pairing images of Mamdani with vulnerable Democratic candidates in both New York and New Jersey.
Republicans targeted not only incumbent House members including Nellie Pou (New Jersey), Tom Suozzi, Laura Gillen, Josh Riley, and John Mannion (all New York), but also Democratic challengers vying for Congress this cycle.
“Every single one of them owns the socialist agenda and is a willing accomplice in their party’s own collapse,” said NRCC spokesperson Maureen O’Toole.
Mamdani, aiming to be the city’s first Muslim mayor, denounced what he described as “racist, baseless” attacks in recent days and called out a climate of Islamophobia.

This is civilizational suicide for America.
It cements NYC’s status as totally Third World.

He told supporters outside a Bronx mosque, “I have sought to be the candidate fighting for every single New Yorker, not simply the Muslim candidate.”
Mamdani voiced his disappointment that, in his experience, “no amount of redirection is ever enough.”
With the campaign boiling over, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in June and is now mounting an independent bid, landed in controversy after a Thursday radio show.
Cuomo appeared to go along as the host suggested Mamdani would “cheer” a terror attack if he became mayor. Cuomo’s team later tried to walk it back, insisting he did not actually agree.
Asked about the uproar the next day, Cuomo dismissed the commentary and said, “I didn’t take the remark serious at the time, of course I think it’s an offensive comment, period. But it did not come out of my mouth, that’s the point.”

Instead, Cuomo accused Mamdani of stirring tensions with various communities in the city and playing “the victim” for political gain.
“Zohran himself is the person who has created the tension with the Jewish community and the LGBT community and the Italian community and the Black community, etc. He is not the victim, he is the offender, and it’s a political tactic,” Cuomo charged.
Cuomo also pushed back on Mamdani’s repeated claims that he and his family are enduring Islamophobia, countering, “New Yorkers are not Islamophobic.”
“New Yorkers are all from different places, that’s who we are,” he asserted. “And New Yorkers accept one another, and New Yorkers have no tolerance whosoever for discrimination of anyone.”
