Squad member Ilhan Omar narrowly avoided being censured and stripped of her committee assignments this week after a razor-thin House vote.
The effort was spearheaded by Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, who filed the motion following Omar’s recent remarks and a video she shared online comparing recently slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk to Dr. Frankenstein.
The South Carolina Republican accused the Minnesota Democrat of crossing a line.
“Ilhan Omar has shown us exactly who she is: she defends political violence and refuses to condemn the loss of innocent lives when it doesn’t suit her agenda, even the cold-blooded assassination of Charlie Kirk,” Mace wrote on social media Monday.

She added that Omar’s behavior was “dangerous, disgraceful, and beneath the United States Congress” while demanding she be stripped of every committee assignment.
Mace accused Omar of smearing Kirk and effectively suggesting he was responsible for his own death during an interview with Mehdi Hasan and by sharing a video that tied Kirk’s rhetoric to his assassination.
During the interview, Omar called the killing “mortifying” while claiming Kirk had defended gun rights and was willing to “debate and downplay” George Floyd’s death.

Omar, goes to justify Charlie Kirk's murder, painting him as bigot and racist.

She also remarked it was “effed up” that some people described Kirk as merely interested in “civil debate.”
Omar pushed back, saying she had never endorsed political violence and insisted she felt compassion for Kirk’s family.
Still, the backlash intensified as Mace highlighted Omar’s past statements, including a 2022 post suggesting the First Amendment does not shield individuals from social consequences such as shame or rejection for their speech.
From her X account, Mace posted, “If you celebrate murder, maybe Somalia can take you back.”
Omar, who arrived in the U.S. as a child refugee fleeing Somalia’s civil war, fired back with her own post.
I know you aren’t well or smart but I hope someone can explain to you that there isn’t a correlation between my committee assignments and deportation. Regardless of what you do with these committees, my office will continue to be next to you and I will continue to be in Congress… https://t.co/3ETIJ1rwfS

Mace doubled down: “One-way ticket to Somalia with your name on it, Ilhan Omar,” she posted on X.

Omar then escalated the bitter exchange with a jab at Mace, saying, “Would love to see you get the help you need next. You belong in rehab, not Congress.”
Mace responded by intensifying her demands: “Ilhan Omar should be stripped of her seat and her citizenship.”

When the House finally voted on Wednesday, the measure collapsed by a single vote — 214 against to 213 in favor.
The dramatic result left Republicans stunned while Democrats accused Mace of exploiting Kirk’s death.
Democratic House Minority Whip Katherine Clark blasted the resolution, calling it “political theater” and “BS meant to bolster [Mace’s] gubernatorial bid.”
She added, “And frankly, she’s trying to monetize this.”
In the end, four Republicans joined Democrats in voting down the measure: Reps. Cory Mills of Florida, Mike Flood of Nebraska, Jeff Hurd of Colorado, and Tom McClintock of California.
McClintock, facing backlash from his own party, issued a statement explaining his decision.
“Ilhan Omar’s comments regarding the assassination of Charlie Kirk are vile and contemptible,” he wrote.
“They deserve the harshest criticism of every man and woman of good will. But this disgusting and hateful speech is still speech and is protected by our First Amendment.”
He argued that censure amounted to formal punishment by the House and that the chamber had already overstepped too often.
“Omar’s comments were not made in the House and even if they were, they broke no House rules,” McClintock said.
He concluded that a free society “depends on tolerating ALL speech — even hateful speech — confident that the best way to sort good from evil is to put the two side by side and trust the people to know the difference.”
“Congress exists for this purpose,” he noted. “For this reason, I voted to table the censure resolution.”
Mills said that he voted against the measure because it was “a constitutional First Amendment issue.”
Flood was worried what would happen to fellow Republicans down the road if Omar was censured. “What goes around comes around,” he remarked.
Mace was shocked that her GOP colleagues tanked the vote, saying it was “really gross, very disappointing.”
“Thank you to my colleagues for having my back and not furthering lies on the House floor,” Omar tweeted after the vote. “Appreciate them safeguarding first amendment protections and the usage of the censure. Finally some sanity in the House.
However, she and Mace continued to snipe at each other online after the fact.
Mace accused Omar of mocking “the cold-blooded assassination of an innocent American husband and father.”
She also claimed that the Minnesota Democrat supported ISIS, the Muslim Brotherhood, and had “incited political violence.”
“And tonight, Congress protected her,” Mace lamented.
Literally none of this is true and this woman needs to get help. We have to stop allowing members who are experiencing mental breakdown to continue to work without getting them the help they need. This is an emergency, let’s help her before she hurts herself or one of us. https://t.co/4DDeIm8QyU

Omar fired back that Mace was experiencing a mental crisis and needed to be reigned in by Congress.
“Literally none of this is true and this woman needs to get help,” she tweeted. “We have to stop allowing members who are experiencing mental breakdown to continue to work without getting them the help they need.”
“This is an emergency, let’s help her before she hurts herself or one of us.”
