President Accused Of ‘Seizing On’ Refugee’s Slaying To Push ‘Crackdown’

President Donald Trump ripped into liberal soft-on-crime policies after the brutal killing of a young Ukrainian refugee on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The case has sparked national outrage, with CNN hosts accusing the president of using the tragedy to fuel his nationwide law-and-order agenda.

The victim, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, had fled the war in Ukraine only to be savagely stabbed in a random attack while riding the train on August 22.

Surveillance footage captured the horrifying scene as a man suddenly lunged at her while she sat quietly, scrolling on her phone.

Police later identified the suspect as 35-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., a homeless career criminal who was free on bail at the time of the killing.

On her program, CNN’s Erin Burnett framed Trump’s reaction as opportunistic.

“Horrific new video of a Ukrainian refugee’s murder caught on camera. It is absolutely horrific. Trump is now seizing on this to push his nationwide crackdown,” Burnett said on “OutFront.”

Trump, however, opened his remarks by offering sympathy to Zarutska’s family before condemning the crime in the strongest terms.

“I just give my love and hope to the family of the young woman who was stabbed this morning or last night in Charlotte by a madman,” Trump said.

Calling the attack “vicious” and “horrible,” he described the suspect as a “lunatic” who struck without reason.

“She’s just sitting there,” Trump added. “So they’re evil people. We have to be able to handle that. If we don’t handle that, we don’t have a country.”

The president tied the tragedy to his push for tougher crime measures. Earlier this month, Trump announced that the federal government would assume control over Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department after a string of high-profile incidents, including the assault of a government staffer during a carjacking.

His administration also launched “Operation Midway Blitz” in Illinois this week, targeting illegal migrants shielded by sanctuary city laws.

While Trump called for stronger enforcement, his critics in the mainstream media pushed back.

CNN’s Brian Stelter suggested that outrage over the refugee’s murder was being exploited for political purposes and accused some of using the crime to inflame racial tensions.

Stelter claimed that “some of the comments around this story are baldly racist, stoking fear of African Americans because this man attacked a white woman.”

“Trump-aligned figures succeeded in making this senseless death a symbol of big-city crime,” he added.

Stelter admitted there were “legitimate questions” about Brown’s long rap sheet but worried they could be “lost amid all of the cesspool kind of comments on social media.”

Trump, in turn, blasted Democrats for policies that allowed Brown to remain free despite 14 previous arrests.

“The perpetrator was a well known career criminal, who had been previously arrested and released on CASHLESS BAIL in January, a total of 14 TIMES. What the hell was he doing riding the train, and walking the streets? Criminals like this need to be LOCKED UP,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

He then linked the killing to North Carolina’s upcoming Senate race. “The blood of this innocent woman can literally be seen dripping from the killer’s knife,” he pointed out. “Now her blood is on the hands of the Democrats who refuse to put bad people in jail, including Former Disgraced Governor and ‘Wannabe Senator’ Roy Cooper.”

“North Carolina, and every State, needs LAW AND ORDER, and only Republicans will deliver it!” the post concluded.

Court records show Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes released Brown in January on a written promise he would return to court after a misdemeanor arrest for misusing 911.

Police at the time described him as schizophrenic, noting that he claimed “man-made materials” were inside his body controlling his movements.

When officers dismissed his claims as a medical issue, Brown became enraged and repeatedly dialed 911 until he was taken into custody.

Despite his unstable condition and a lengthy criminal history including armed robbery and assault, he was allowed to walk free.

Even Brown’s own mother admitted the courts had failed the public by letting her son roam the streets untreated.

Yet Charlotte’s Democrat mayor, Vi Lyles, issued a statement suggesting Brown himself was a victim of a broken system.

“This is a tragic situation that sheds light on problems with society safety nets related to mental healthcare and the systems that should be in place,” she said.

Lyles insisted that mental health should be treated “with the same compassion, diligence and commitment as cancer or heart disease,” adding, “We will never arrest our way out [of] issues such as homelessness and mental health.”

Her remarks sparked backlash as she noted that, “Those who are unhoused are more frequently the victim of crimes and not the perpetrators.”

“Too many people who are on the street need a safe place to sleep and wrap around services that lift them up. We, as a community, must do better,” she concluded.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein offered condolences to Zarutska’s family but was criticized for calling only for “more cops.”

“I am heartbroken for the family of Iryna Zarutska, who lost their loved one to this senseless act of violence, and I am appalled by the footage of her murder,” Stein said.

“We need more cops on the beat to keep people safe. That’s why my budget calls for more funding to hire more well-trained police officers.”

Republicans quickly fired back after Stein’s post. North Carolina Rep. Tim Moore wrote, “Are you serious? Our law enforcement officers arrested this guy over and over again.”

“This is a matter of having soft-on-crime, leftist judges and magistrates turning these career criminals loose.”

Arizona Senator Tom Cotton also joined in, blasting Roy Cooper’s legacy as governor.

“If Governor Stein really cared, he would call to revoke Roy Cooper’s ‘Task Force for Racial Equity’ that kept Zarutska’s killer on the streets,” Cotton argued.

“Even after 14 arrests. The problem isn’t the number of police. It’s Roy Cooper’s pro-criminal policies.”
