Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis blasted California’s Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom for mocking President Trump on social media while his own state faces mounting scandals, including a fatal crash tied to California’s licensing failures.
During a Monday night appearance on Fox News’s Hannity, host Sean Hannity floated the idea of a second debate between the two high-profile governors, both viewed as likely contenders in the 2028 presidential race.
DeSantis took a swipe at Newsom’s recent online antics, accusing the Democrat of trying to score cheap points with progressives rather than governing responsibly.
“I know he’s not going to do that,” DeSantis said, referring to a possible debate.

“I think he has settled into this being a troller of President Trump. It seems to get him some notoriety with kind of their far-left base.”
DeSantis warned that Americans are tired of political gamesmanship and see Newsom’s behavior for what it is.
“I will tell you, the average American watching this, they look at it the way you and I do,” he told Hannity.
“Wait a minute, you’ve got problems in your state — of homelessness, people can’t rebuild, crushing taxes and regulations — why don’t you focus on fixing those rather than trying to be cheeky with the president of the United States?”
In recent weeks, Newsom and his team have tried to imitate Trump’s online persona, even using all-caps posts and reworking his rhetoric to look like the president’s messaging.
But critics argue the timing couldn’t be worse, as California faces a looming loss of federal funding unless it complies with one of Trump’s recent executive actions.
On Tuesday, Department of Transportation official Sean Duffy announced that the agency would strip federal funds from states that fail to enforce English language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.
He accused California, Washington, and New Mexico of ignoring federal law by not pulling unsafe drivers off the road for failing to meet those requirements.
If you drive a truck on our roads, you must speak and read English. There will be actions taken against those who don’t follow the rules.

Duffy gave the three states 30 days to comply or risk losing millions. According to DOT figures, California receives $30 million through the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program, Washington gets $10 million, and New Mexico takes in $7 million.
“States don’t get to pick and choose which federal safety rules to follow,” Duffy said. “As we saw with the horrific Florida crash that killed three, when states fail to enforce the law, they put the driving public in danger.”

“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are taking aggressive action to close these safety gaps, hold states accountable, and make sure every commercial driver on the road is qualified to operate a 40-ton vehicle,” he noted.
The crackdown follows a devastating wreck in Florida earlier this month.
Authorities said Harjinder Singh, an Indian national who obtained his commercial driver’s license in California, caused the crash when his truck plowed into a minivan after an illegal U-turn. All three people inside the minivan were killed instantly.
Today, I personally escorted the thug who took the lives of three Floridians. Harjinder Singh should never have been in this country, and he never should have been granted a CDL by California. The case drew attention to California’s licensing standards, which have come under scrutiny since a 2016 Obama-era memorandum relaxed enforcement of English language proficiency for truck drivers.
President Trump reversed that move earlier this year, demanding stricter compliance after a spike in deadly semi-truck crashes nationwide.
Newsom’s office, however, fired back. A spokesperson for the governor accused Trump officials of trying to shift responsibility.
“This is rich. The Trump administration approved the federal work permit for the man who killed 3 people — and now they’re scrambling to shift blame after getting caught,” Newsom spokesperson Diana Crofts-Pelayo said in a statement to NBC News.
“Sean’s nonsense announcement is as big a joke as the Trump administration itself. SAD!”
But Homeland Security officials quickly disputed her account. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said Singh’s work authorization had been denied under the Trump administration in 2020 and was later approved in June 2021, which was months into President Biden’s term.
False. Harjinder Singh is in the United States illegally and his work authorization was rejected under the Trump Administration on September 14, 2020. It was later approved under the Biden Administration June 9, 2021.

“False. Harjinder Singh is in the United States illegally and his work authorization was rejected under the Trump Administration on September 14, 2020. It was later approved under the Biden Administration June 9, 2021,” McLaughlin wrote on X.
“The state of California issues Commercial Drivers Licenses. There is no national CDL.”
Newsom’s team doubled down, responding online, “Thank you for confirming that the federal government issued him a work permit and you FAILED to revoke it!”
Meanwhile, Florida is moving rapidly in the opposite direction. State Attorney General James Uthmeier announced that weigh stations across the state will now serve as Immigration and Customs Enforcement checkpoints.
He said the policy is designed to keep unqualified drivers off the road.
Last night, the Bay County Sheriff's Office arrested an illegal alien who was driving a commercial vehicle with a New Jersey driver's license that is not valid in Florida. Roberto Carlos Vergara Cervantes from Ecuador is now on an ICE hold and will be deported. pic.twitter.com/vl7ZolqZcc

“Someone that never should have been given a driver’s license, much less a CDL license to drive larger commercial vehicles, engaged in reckless behavior that took three lives,” Uthmeier said during a press conference in Live Oak.
Uthmeier raised alarms about how many illegal immigrants might currently be operating commercial trucks nationwide.
“There’s no telling how many illegal aliens are in this country driving large commercial vehicles and putting American families in a safety risk every single day,” he warned.
