Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) grew noticeably irritated during a CNN interview Wednesday after anchor Jake Tapper questioned her about President Donald Trump’s accusations regarding alleged insider trading linked to her stock dealings.
Speaking from the White House earlier in the day, Trump reiterated his support for banning federal officials from engaging in stock trading and took direct aim at Pelosi, alleging she had personally profited from privileged information during her time in Congress.
“You know, Nancy Pelosi became rich by having inside information. She made a fortune with her husband, and I think that’s disgraceful,” Trump said during the press briefing.
“And what I do think is Nancy Pelosi should be investigated, because she has the highest return of anybody practically in the history of Wall Street, save a few,” Trump continued.

“And how did that happen? It happened by she knows exactly what’s gonna happen, what’s gonna be announced, she buys stock, and then the stock goes up after the announcement’s made. And she ought to be investigated.”
That accusation came up during Pelosi’s appearance on The Lead with Jake Tapper.
The CNN anchor tried to cue up a clip of Trump’s comments but ran into technical issues.
“This afternoon, President Trump mentioned you, and he made an allegation about your investments. I want to roll that clip and then give you a chance to respond,” Tapper began.
When the video failed to load, he attempted to read Trump’s statement aloud instead.
“We seem to be having some — let me just read what he said. I’m sorry that we had some sort of technical issue. Nancy Pelosi became rich —”
Pelosi cut him off. “Why do you have to read that? We’re here to talk about the 60th anniversary of Medicaid. That’s what I agreed to come to talk about.”

Tapper pushed forward anyway, saying, “Yeah, but I wanted to give you a chance to respond. He accused you of insider trading. What’s your response to that?”
“That’s ridiculous,” Pelosi fired back. “In fact, I very much support stopping the trading of members of Congress.”
“Not that I think anybody is doing anything wrong, if they are, they are prosecuted and they go to jail, but because of the confidence it instills in the American people, ‘Don’t worry about this,’” she added.
“But I have no concern about the obvious investments that have been made over time. I’m not into it, my husband is, but it isn’t anything to do with anything insider,” Pelosi continued.
“But the president has his own exposure, so he’s always projecting,” she deflected. “He’s always projecting, and let’s not give him any more time on that, please. We’re going forward here.”
Pelosi then referenced the 2022 break-in at her home and the attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi, linking it to Trump’s rhetoric.
“While he might make fun of us, while somebody inspired by him breaks into our home and in a deadly fashion hits my husband over the head, and he thinks that’s a riot,” she ranted.
“I’d rather not go into some of my other complaints about him right now. Rather to talk about the 60th anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare.”
In the wake of Trump’s renewed criticism, Pelosi pivoted to backing new legislation aimed at curbing financial conflicts of interest in public office.
She announced her support for the HONEST Act, short for Halting Ownership of Non-Ethical Securities and Trusts, which targets stock trading among high-ranking federal officials.
The measure was originally introduced under a different name by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.): the PELOSI Act — a clear reference to criticism of Pelosi and her husband’s lucrative stock trades during her tenure in Congress.
Hawley later dropped the acronym and expanded the bill’s scope to cover presidents and vice presidents.
Pelosi, now on board with the revamped version, said she “strongly” backs the bipartisan proposal and looks forward to casting a vote in favor of it.
“If legislation is advanced to help restore trust in government and ensure that those in power are held to the highest ethical standards, then I am proud to support it — no matter what they decide to name it,” Pelosi said in a statement.
“While I appreciate the creativity of my Republican colleagues in drafting legislative acronyms, I welcome any serious effort to raise ethical standards in public service,” she added.
“The HONEST Act, as amended, rightly applies its stock trading ban not only to Members of Congress, but now to the President and Vice President as well.”
Trump also took aim at Hawley after the Missouri senator sided with Democrats earlier that day to block a Republican-led push for more transparency into Pelosi’s financial history.
Specifically, Hawley opposed a measure put forward by Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) that sought to force the federal government to release details on the Pelosis’ stock trades spanning the past 25 years.
“Why would one ‘Republican,’ Senator Josh Hawley from the Great State of Missouri, join with all of the Democrats to block a Review, sponsored by Senator Rick Scott, and with the support of almost all other Republicans, of Nancy Pelosi’s Stock Trading over the last 25 years,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

“The Democrats, because of our tremendous ACHIEVEMENTS and SUCCESS, have been trying to ‘Target’ me for a long period of time, and they’re using Josh Hawley, who I got elected TWICE, as a pawn to help them.”
The president continued hammering Hawley in a follow-up post, accusing him of handing Pelosi a political win.
“I wonder why Hawley would pass a Bill that Nancy Pelosi is in absolute love with — He is playing right into the dirty hands of the Democrats,” Trump added. “It’s a great Bill for her, and her ‘husband,’ but so bad for our Country!”
