Federal authorities are investigating a disturbing cyber intrusion involving the impersonation of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
An unidentified individual, utilizing advanced technology, contacted prominent Republicans and business executives posing as Wiles, according to reporting by the Wall Street Journal.
The impersonator reportedly accessed Wiles’s personal cellphone contacts, enabling outreach to high-profile individuals.
“The White House takes the cybersecurity of all staff very seriously, and this matter continues to be investigated,” a White House official stated.
The breach affected Wiles’s personal cellphone, not her government-issued device.
AI Technology Suspected
Investigators believe the impersonator employed artificial intelligence to mimic Wiles’s voice, making phone calls and sending text messages that closely resembled her communication style.
Some recipients noted discrepancies, such as unusual grammar and requests inconsistent with Wiles’s typical behavior, including solicitations for cash transfers and inquiries about assembling pardon lists.
“The FBI takes all threats against the president, his staff, and our cybersecurity with the utmost seriousness,” FBI Director Kash Patel said.
“Safeguarding our administration officials’ ability to securely communicate to accomplish the president’s mission is a top priority.”
This incident follows a previous cyberattack during the 2024 presidential campaign, where Iranian operatives allegedly hacked into Wiles’s email account.
Given Wiles’s pivotal role in the Trump administration, her personal data is a valuable target for malicious actors.
The FBI and U.S. intelligence agencies are actively working to identify the perpetrator and assess the motive behind this sophisticated impersonation scheme.
