The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued formal letters to select hospitals across the nation, demanding comprehensive data on their practices concerning gender-related medical interventions for minors.
CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating, “These are irreversible, high-risk procedures being conducted on vulnerable children, often at taxpayer expense.”
The letters, dispatched on May 28, require hospitals to provide detailed information within 30 days regarding their protocols for informed consent, any adverse events associated with gender dysphoria treatments, and complete financial data for pediatric sex trait modifications funded wholly or partially by federal programs.
Oz underscored the gravity of the situation: “Hospitals accepting federal funds are expected to meet rigorous quality standards and uphold the highest level of stewardship when it comes to public resources—we will not turn a blind eye to procedures that lack a solid foundation of evidence and may result in lifelong harm.”
Scrutinizing Evidence and Financial Practices
The CMS’s action aligns with the Trump administration’s broader efforts to reevaluate and regulate gender-affirming care for minors.
A recent report commissioned by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) highlighted concerns about the efficacy and safety of such interventions, advocating for psychotherapy as a noninvasive alternative.
Oz referenced this report, noting that treatments like hormone therapy and puberty blockers “lack reliable evidence of benefits for minors.”
The CMS’s inquiry seeks transparency not only in medical practices but also in financial dealings.
Hospitals are being asked to disclose how federal funds are utilized in gender-related procedures for children, ensuring that taxpayer money is not supporting unproven and potentially harmful treatments.
