A disturbing case of political extremism unfolded on January 27, 2025, when Ryan Michael English was apprehended outside the U.S. Capitol.
English, who reportedly identifies as transgender and also goes by “Riley Jane English,” was found carrying a folding knife and two Molotov cocktails constructed from vodka bottles with cloth wicks, along with a lighter.
He voluntarily approached Capitol Police, stating, “I’d like to turn myself in,” after realizing his plans would not unfold as easily as he’d hoped.
He admitted his intent to assassinate Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent during his Senate confirmation hearing.
Targeted Multiple High-Profile Republicans
Court documents reveal that English initially planned to target House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, both prominent figures in the Trump administration.
He also expressed intentions to attack the Heritage Foundation, a leading conservative think tank.
English altered his plan upon learning the timing of Bessent’s confirmation hearing, deciding to target him instead.
In a note found on his person, English wrote, “This is terrible but I can’t do nothing while [they] kill my sisters. … I’m so sorry for lying and plotting and lying.”
English faces charges of attempted assassination of a cabinet member nominee and carrying a dangerous weapon on Capitol grounds. He is currently in custody and appeared in court on May 8, 2025.
Rising Threat of Left-Wing Political Violence
This incident underscores a growing trend of politically motivated violence from left-wing extremists targeting conservative leaders and institutions.
In April, a 38-year-old male was arrested for attempting to burn down Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence while Shapiro and his family were inside.
Authorities say the attacker in that case will face charges of attempted murder and terrorism.
The incident is also a stark reminder of the multiple failed attempts on President Donald Trump’s life.
