MTG Blasts Luna For Siding With Dems

3 mins read

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) slammed Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) for pushing a vote on a proposal to allow proxy voting for new parents in Congress, a move that disrupted key Republican legislative efforts.

Luna’s initiative gained traction when nine Republican lawmakers sided with Democrats in rejecting a procedural rule designed to block her from advancing the proxy voting measure.

The vote brought House business to a standstill, preventing progress on conservative priorities such as limiting federal judicial power and mandating proof of citizenship for voting.

As a result, GOP leaders canceled all remaining votes for the week. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) informed members that the next vote in the House would not take place until Monday night.

“I can’t believe that Congress was hijacked this week over Luna’s resolution to allow members to skip work and vote from home,” Greene wrote in a post on X on Tuesday.

“We have critical bills to pass to prevent illegals from voting and to stop judges from vetoing President Trump’s agenda,” she continued. “It’s a shame that selfish politicians are putting themselves before the American people.”

Greene also voiced opposition to the idea of proxy voting itself, calling it unconstitutional. She argued that serving in Congress requires full commitment and those unable to fulfill their duties should “step aside.”

“Being a member of Congress is a privilege. You’re serving your district. There’s lots of seasons of life. I’m a mother,”  Greene stated in a video attached to her post. “I’ve raised three children, and when my children were babies and were young, I prioritized them in that season of life.”

The lawmaker said that she now serves in Congress because she’s done raising children.

“And if any member of Congress, for any reason whatsoever, finds them in a situation where they’re not able to do the job here, the important job we’re elected to do, they should step down because someone else can serve in their place,” she added.

Luna secured the required 218 signatures on her discharge petition, compelling a vote on Rep. Brittany Pettersen’s (D-Colo.) resolution.

The measure would grant proxy voting rights for up to 12 weeks to lawmakers who give birth or whose spouses have a child.

On Tuesday, Luna used a procedural maneuver to force a vote on the resolution. If no immediate action is taken, the House will be required to address the matter within two legislative days, pushing the timeline into the following week due to the canceled votes.

Luna announced on Monday that she was leaving the House Freedom Caucus, citing heavy-handed efforts to derail her resolution.

“This was a modest, family-centered proposal. Yet, a small group among us threatened the Speaker, vowing to halt floor proceedings indefinitely, regardless of the legislation at stake, including President Trump’s agenda, unless he altered the rules to block my discharge petition,” she wrote.

She noted that the proposed rule change would have impacted fewer than 14 mothers in congressional history but said some Republicans forced Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to attach the SAVE Act, a voter integrity measure, to a motion aimed at killing her resolution.

“The intent was clear: to misrepresent me and the members supporting this pro-life, pro-family initiative — one of the most significant in congressional history — as obstructing the President and opposing election integrity,” Luna continued.

“This tactic was not just a betrayal of trust; it was a descent into the very behavior we have long condemned — a practice that we, as a group, have repeatedly criticized leadership for allowing.”

Speaker Johnson condemned the Republicans who sided with Democrats, attributing the legislative standstill to their actions.

“That rule being brought down means that we can’t have any further action on the floor this week,” Johnson told reporters.

“That means we will not be voting on the SAVE Act for election integrity. We will not be voting on the rogue judges who are attacking President Trump’s agenda. We will not be taking down these terrible Biden policies with the CRA votes. All that was just wiped off the table,” he said.

“It’s a very disappointing result on the floor there, a handful of Republicans joined with all Democrats to take down a rule,” Johnson added. “That’s rarely done.”

  1. The proxy votes worked great during piglosi’s term. When you are voted into office, you need to do your job.

  2. I have to agree on this one about Luna.. Getting upset because her non-sensical bill was scrubbed shouldn’t have caused the chaos that she pulled.. “My feelings got hurt, I’ll get even”
