Citing a “highly credible” whistleblower, House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) and Senator Chuck Grassley asserted that the FBI has material documenting “a criminal scheme” involving President Joe Biden and a foreign national.
The subpoena is Comer’s most significant step yet into his ongoing investigation of the president after primarily focusing on his family members, like son Hunter Biden.
In a separate letter, the two Republicans said the scheme involved “then-Vice President Biden and a foreign national relating to the exchange of money for policy decisions.”
They did not offer any further details on the allegations, including who alleged them or what specifically they allude to.
But Comer’s work has made clear that his ultimate goal is to link the president to Hunter’s business deals, which are the subject of an ongoing federal investigation.
The pair said they were informed of the possible existence of the material from a “high credible whistleblower” who got in touch with lawmakers to inform them of a conversation the FBI had with a confidential source.
“Based on the alleged specificity within the document, it would appear that the DOJ and the FBI have enough information to determine the truth and accuracy of the information contained within it. However, it remains unclear what steps, if any, were taken to investigate the matter,” Comer and Grassley wrote in their letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The subpoena requires the FBI to hand over any FD-1023 forms – which document conversations with confidential human sources – created or modified in June 2020 that contain the word “Biden”.
It gives the FBI until May 10th to comply and hand over the documents.
Grassley appeared on Fox News to discuss the subpoena.
When asked if the documents could have anything to do with Biden family business dealings in Ukraine or China, he replied, “I guess basically we’ve got to wait to see what the document exactly says.”
